He then became a scriptwriter, working mostly for BBC Light Entertainment. He wrote hundreds of situation comedies including Know Your Place, Take Me to Your Reader, God Bless the Price of Whales, and four series of Mind Your Own Business.

For more than two decades he has been a metal detector user and amateur archaeologist. He has worked on numerous digs and reconstruction projects. Many of his finds have appeared in the archaeology literature and he has contributed to The Searcher and Treasure Hunting magazines.

He was born in Kent, lived for a while in New South Wales, and now spends his time between New York and London, in a derelict part of Devon. He is married to an Australian chemist and has two children who left home as soon as possible. His hobbies are medieval history and putting the wrong things in recycling bins.
